It is a microaerobic, gram-negative, nonmotile, rod of about 0.2 to 0.9 um wide and 1 to 3 um long with chemoorganotrophic, mesophilic metabolism. Ornithobacterium strains grow under various atmospheric conditions at temperatures between 30 and 42 degrees Celsius. Strains have been isolated from respiratory tracts of turkeys, chickens, rooks, and a partridge, and most strains have been associated with infections such as tracheitis, pericarditis, sinusitis, airsacculitis, and pneumonia. It has become an emerging pathogen in the poultry industry. Strain CCUG 23171 is the type strain (adapted from PMID 8123560)."xsd:string |
